Students
and Research Associates
My
research group is closely
linked to the Quantitative
Fisheries Center
(QFC) which I co-direct with Dr. James Bence. I am currently advising
four graduate students, Jared
Myers (PhD), Brian
Langseth (PhD), Aaron
Berger (PhD), and Marty Williams (MS). Jared
recently defended his Master's thesis on the population dynamics
of
cisco in two Lake Superior embayments, and has moved on to a new cisco
research project that will form the basis of his
Phd work. Brian Langseth
joined the QFC in fall 2007 as MSU's first Willam E. Ricker Fellow.
Brian's dissertation research is focused on multispecies harvest
management issues in Lake Huron. Aaron joined my lab in summer 2008
after completing his Masters degree at Oregon State
University. His dissertation research will address percid harvest
management issues in Lake Erie. Marty starts his Masters program
in August 2009 and will be working on a Lake Michigan salmon project,
with a focus on wild Chinook salmon dynamics.
At
the QFC I am also working
closely with post-doctoral Research Associates Brian Irwin and Iyob Tsehaye. Weihai Lui is our programmer
and data analyst who provides invaluable assistance on many projects,
not to mention systems support. Jon Deroba also worked with the QFC as
a post-doc until recently, including assisting me with a new Alaska
salmon management project. Jon has accepted a position with the
National Marine Fisheries Service at Woods Hole, and I will be
recruiting a new post-doc to replace Jon soon.
